Tom Brown’s Bio
Tom Brown was a first-team All-American in baseball and an All-Atlantic Coast Conference star in football at the University of Maryland. He played Major League Baseball for the Washington Senators and became a starting defensive back on the greatest Green Bay Packers teams under Vince Lombardi. Tom Brown is the first man to play Major League Baseball and participate in two NFL Super bowls. In 1966 Tom Brown clutched an interception of Dallas Cowboy’s Don Meredith’s desperation pass with seconds remaining, Guaranteeing Green Bay a spot in the 1st Super Bowl.
Tom retired last year from his post professional sports career that was spent helping children in sports. Tom had a vision of creating a safe zone for children to enjoy sports without being critiqued. In its tenure, the Tom Brown Rookie League has enrolled over 3,500 players from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. In addition, the league has provided hundreds of self-funded scholarships to underserved children.
Tom Brown’s Rookie League is a Non-Profit Organization dedicated to teaching Youth Sports in a Positive Sports Atmosphere. Students in the Rookie League learn to play as a group with instructions in a relaxed, positive arena. Their skills and self-esteem improve over the course of the season. They learn a love for the game. There are no fancy uniforms, no trophies, no all-stars, and no tournaments. An atmosphere where everyone plays all positions and learning happens without stress.
Tom has handed over the basketball coaching reins to Jessie, his daughter, and he will continue as executive director. Proceeds from the memorabilia show will go to Tom Brown’s Rookie League. To learn more about the program and view his memorabilia collection, go to www.tombrownsrookieleague.org.
